Connection troubles

hello,

I am having some problems with my VM201 card while connecting from outside my home network to the VM201.
The remote control program for pc works, if i go tho the ip adres of the relay card thru the internet browser (connected to my Wifi) it also works.

Now i read on this forum that you have to program your router for “port forwarding” i followd all the steps and saved it.
still it doenst work, from my home network is possible to connect to the VM201 but not from outside…

Anybody got an idea??
from my home network is possible to connect to the VM201 but not from outside…
If you are trying to use your browser, and everything is configured 100% correctly, then it is highly likely that port 80 can not be used for port forwarding.

What can you do about it?
Update your VM201 firmware which will allow you to change from port 80 to a port another port (6000, for example). Then set up port forwarding for this new port.

How do you update the firmware?
Download the image file: VM201Build1315.bin
Go to the Windows command prompt and upload the image with tftp:

tftp <vm201-ip-address> put "VM201Build1315.bin"

You may need to install tftp via the Add/Remove Windows Features

ty for the quick reply, but i’m afriad i don’t understand 100%

How do i set up this “tftp” thing?

grtz

You can run tftp from the command prompt. Not all versions of Windows have this installed by default. If it is not installed you will need to install it through the Control Panel.

If this does not tell you much, please consult with someone you know that is more experienced with computers. Or look for more information on Google.

Ok, this is what i fixed to my pc

Control Panel > Programs and Features > click Turn Windows features On or Off in left side > enable Client Telnet and Client TFTP

So this should be working right now.
But if i try typing the commands u said the command prompt says: “can’t read from local file”

What am i doing wrong???

grt

You may to provide the complete path to the file.
for example.
tftp put c:\download"VM201Build1315.bin"
or where ever it is.

ok the VM201 is upgraded now to 1315

but still i can not connect from outside to the relay card…

i configured my telenet modem also with this : velleman.eu/downloads/0/user … _vm201.pdf
but it doesn’t work

anybody an idea???

grt

There’s a lot that it could be.
Are you using your public IP address?
Do you have all of the ports configured?

I am using the ip adress that my router gave me i think, i plugged the card in and then tapped the pressure button on the card 5 times to watch my ip adress, and this is the one i am using. ( 192.168.0.156)

What you mean by “ALL” the ports configured??

grtz

You are using the local IP address 192.168.0.156 to contact the board from outside your network?

That’s the ip adress i am using… is it local? i don’t know? how do i check???

i can only connect when i am on my wifi home network…

You need to use the public IP address the one that is assigned to the wan port of your router
You should find this under status of the router
Because this is a dynamic address it can change

The address 192.168.0.156 is only valid when you’re at home, inside your home network, it has no meaning outside of that network. To know the address that the world gave you, type “what’s my ip address” in Google and Google will tell you “Your public IP address is …”.

Both addresses may change at random times during the day, so whatever address works today may not work tomorrow, you will need to verify the address regularly before using it.

Ok thank you for the explanation!!!

So how do i fix my ip adress so it won’t change? otherwise i have to give all the time an other ip adress?

grt

You can call your service provider and ask about a fixed IP address.
However most times they will charge for this.

You can also search for a free dynamic DNS service.
These are getting rare but some are still around.

Ok, my public ip adress is 84.195.115.100

i tried this ip adress in the program remote control on my pc connected to my home network and this adress also works…

Does this mean if i try this adres with the remote control program on an other network type in the 84.195.115.100 ip adress and then it works???

It should as long as you have the ports formwaded from the outside of the firewall to the VM201
But it sounds like you are on the right path

When i try connecting from outside i get this error : connection failed with error 10049

Are my ports not ALL open or am i missing something?

grt

It sounds like you do not have the right ports forwarded in your router.
