Compare your Print Quality

Ok, I gave myself a shot. Quite dissapointed with my printer, TBH. Z axis artifacts with white plastic, wavy walls. Maybe anyone knows, how to solve these issues? Here are results for your judgement. Sorry for the quality of photos, it is dark already and hard to get a good photo. Both owls are the same settings, just different PLA colour. I have used cantax config for Cura. Waiting for comments

The link you gave is asking for a user ID and password.

Sorry, here is the link, should be good now.

I think your results don’t look that bad. Maybe it’s hard to see on a picture.
Is it just the white owl having z artifacts and wavy walls or both?

What about the filament diameter? Did you measure it right for both colours and set it in the slicer settings?
You could try to lower the temp when printing the white filament.

Did you modify your z-axis?

They both pretty much have same issues, just harder to notice on the black one. The filament diameter was measured for the white one, and left the same for the black one.

My Z axis is reworked with TR 8x1.5 spindle and flex coupler. Also, my belts are changed to GT2 with 20 teeth pulleys

For an entry level machine I think they look great.
As far as the white goes I have not had a lot of luck with it.
I think it may have something to do the the pigments and the temperature.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay,
i finally printed the owl but rescaled to 0.4 and got (for me) good results.
i used the Cura settings, changing the nozzel to 0.5mm (instead of 0.4), 1mm for the shell thickness (instead of 0.8mm) and the retract to 4mm.
am using the stock hardware, no flexcoupler, no trapezoidal screw, no E3D, just the original hardware.

and here’s the result : printed in Blue PLA rescaled to 0.4 so it’s harder to get the details. (whitout any finishing)

absolutly not wobbly :

details of the tree trunk also appear

the only issue i had is the messy at the top, i changed the retract to 4mm but it’s seems to be not enough

any idea to get a cleaner print at the top ??

this is the finished print, i use a small lighter to burn all those small filaments, in very quick movements :

so how did you find these ?

thank’s

Can I have the link to download this object ?

Thanks in advance

Try lowering retraction distance. I use 0.8mm with speed 60 mm/s

Here it is

thanks a lot

Here is a print with more sorts of PLA-s.
Layer 0,1mm, nozzle 0,4 mm, Simplify3D. 190c.

Hey all.
Good idea this. Here are my results;

Print Settings:
Layer Height: 0.15mm
Nozzle: 0.5mm
Extrusion Multiplier: 1.15
Perimeters: 3
Bottom/Top Layers: 1.05mm
Infill: 0%
Speed: 50mm/s, Outer Perimeter: 40mm/s
Acceleration: 1000mm/s²
Extruder Temperature: 190°C
Bed Temperature: 60°C (initially, then 50°C)
Fan: Always on 100%
Filament: PLA 3mm black (ex Jaycar)
Slicer: Slic3r

Modifications:

  1. Bed: inverted PCB, thermal transfer tape/paste, glass, diluted PVA for adhesion

Scale 0.5, Calculated Print Time: 1h 3m

Notes: There were a number of occasions where the printer seemed to pause – no activity for a second or so (I thought it was going to crash but it continued). At the point where the neck starts, the print started to curl up. You could actually see the print being pushed down as the nozzle rode over it. There were a couple of points where the nozzle was extruding into thin air (my owl seems to have a cold). The preview froze for some reason.

Comments/suggestions welcome.

p.s. don’t have an image url, sorry

Hi folks!
At first : Happy 2015 to you all!

I’m currently reprinting the owl, (http://forum.velleman.eu/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=13204#p58034)
after some adjustments on my hanging z axis mounts.
Looks good so far. Wobble seems to have disappeared again now.

Here are the pictures.
Looks even better in real than on the photos, due to the poor lighting here, but quite good.
I print it again with max cooling set to 60% to prevent the nozzle clog i got, as my fan nozzle seems to be a bit TOO effective

What happened to the top of his head??

Lol
What happened to the top of his head??

Lol
He had serious headache

No, the hotend was cooled down too much by the cooling fan, so the nozzle clogged.

Looks really good for a stock K8200.
Retraction with the stock Hotend is really tricky. The problem is, that the filament melting zone keeps growing upside the Hotend. It doesn’t have active cooling. You could try to cool the Cold-Side of the Hotend with a little fan. Although, you will never get it to work perfectly. I never got it work as good as shown on your pictures.

Did you print from sd or usb? Maybe the PC you print it with lags a bit. I always print from sd. Never had such lags in my prints. Just once when i was slicing with kisslicer and did’t configure it right. Resulted in the printer waiting for temperature to reach when changed while printing.

Printed with trimer flax 2,75 mm on 220c with 0,4mm nozzle, 0,1mm layer. Battery AAA for comparation. One small head and one big Hellboy.

My 5 cents.

Slicer: Cura 14.01

Modifications:

  1. Replaced the M8 screw for Z axis with a new one
  2. Z axis Stepper Motor Mount
  3. Flexible coupling
No modifications to the X and Y axis

Owl

Print Settings:
Layer Height: 0.2 mm
Noozle: 0.4mm E3D V6
Perimeters: 1 mm
Bottom/Top Layers: 1 mm
Fill density: 20%
Print speed: 20 mm/s
Travel speed: 40 mm/sec
Flow: 75%

Acceleration: 2000mm/s²
Temperature: 200°C
Bed: Mirror with tape 50°C
Fan: On 80% above a height of .02 mm
Filament: Velleman PLA 3mm Orange
No supports enabled

Torture test:

Parameters as above only flow increased to 85%

Here is the Owl again.

This time in yellow pla as the blue one turned out clogging the nozzle every time.
(should have bought higher quality i think)

Print Settings:
Layer Height: 0.2mm
Hotend : E3D v6
Nozzle: 0.4mm
Perimeters: 3 (1.2mm)
Bottom/Top Layers: 5 (1.0mm)
Infill: 0%
Speed: 50mm/s , Outer Perimeter: 47mm/s
Acceleration: 9000mm/s²
X/Y jerk : 20mm/s²
Temperature: 240°C
Bed: Glass plate 70°C
Fan: on from start at 30%
Filament: Velleman yellow PLA

My Printer mods :

Modifications:

  1. Heatbed upgrade for 24v second Power supply
  2. E3Dv6 Hotend 0.4mm Nozzle (actual i have all available nozzle sizes)
  3. Extruder inlay rework for printing ninjaflex : thingiverse.com/thing:548827
  4. 8 x 1.5 trapezoidal leadscrew Z axis upgrade
  5. hanging Z axis mount for K8204 : thingiverse.com/thing:648925
  6. GT2 2mm Belts and 16tooth pulleys for X and Y axis (working great, but the mounts i found are not good, so they will be redone, especially the Y belt mount)

Planned :
upgrade heatbed to kapton heater pad and use only glass plate (new mount included) as bed for eliminating warp
Volcano Upgrade for E3D V6 for better printing with flex filaments
