When printing from SD card, the printer ... stops?

Hi Guys,

I think, I saw an earlier post on a similar topic, but I couldn’t find the thread back - so here’s a new post.

While being some 2 hours into a 4 hour print, working from SD card, the printer suddenly stops working. Just sits at it’s last point, doing nothing.

I tried to use the controller menu to “pause” & “resume” the job, but to no avail.

Unfortunately, you can’t control the Z-axis from the menu, so I had to bring the printer back to the PC & hook it up, before I could lower the table & inspect for possible issues. Found nothing out of the ordinary, though.

(Team Velleman, could I request that you’d add the Z-axis control into the on-board controller with any next firmware update? Bit inconvenient, not being able to have the Z-axis included in the movement menu).

Anyway - about the printjob being stopped mid-job. What’s your experience, guys - any suggestions what that is or could have been? Any specific signs I should look for?
Here’s a pic:

I’ve restarted the job via USB cable now. Reloaded the item into Repetier & re-sliced it.
I’ve still got the original .GCO file of the job that stopped: anything in there, I should look for?

Thanks for any help you could provide.

Cheers,

Harry D.
Unfortunately, you can’t control the Z-axis from the menu
Actually you can but only with 1mm or lower moves. It wont allow 10mm moves. The same goes for the extruder.

One reason for the job stopping before the end is a truncated G-code. When loading the file from your PC, if you remove the SD card too soon (or without using the “eject” option) you can end up with only a part of the file copied on it. Edit the file and check if the End G-code sequence (the one in the Cura settings) is present at the end of the file.

Other reason is the printer hanging up due to noise or power surges on the mains (I use an UPS to avoid this).

Right: a blimp in the powersupply wouldn’t be a first, for us… So, that’s probably the cause.

I had checked with local shops for a UPS last week again (MediaMarkt & BCC amongst others), but they don’t carry those. Just ordered one online at Conrad - having a UPS is certainly a good plan, not only for the 3D printer.

I’ll check the file on the SD card, just to be sure. But I’m pretty sure that the file will turn out alright.

Thanks!
