With my K8400 i ordered two rolls of 3mm official Velleman filament, but the 3mm doesn’t fit!! Also, the promised 5m sample pla was not included in the box.
Now i read that the k8400 needs 1.7mm but i see no webshops selling velleman 1.7 pla.
please advise. I would like to start printing quickly.
Why would you want to buy “velleman” filament? Indeed the k8400 no longer uses 3mm, now it is 1.75mm. Any filament with this diameter can be used. There are enough websites you can order from (charlies3dprint for cheaper chinese filament which print great btw, colorfabb which is more expensive and produced in europe, …)
why? because for a beginner it like me, it seemed that the most logical thing to do when you buy the printer, you buy the accessoires that are advertised wuth the printer, to make sure you get stuff that works the first time… Now clearly the webshop gave me the wrong impression (just like the 2nd nozzle issue).
In the future i will search for the cheap stuff surely, but only after i am sure it works.
Sorry, there is no filament supplied with the K8400, only with the K8200.
We’d recommend to use Velleman PLA because the config files have been optimized for our PLA.
You can use other brands, but then you will have to tweak the config yourself.
Your Velleman distributor carries 1.75mm Velleman PLA & ABS or he can order it for you.
I never really had to tweak anything with different brands of PLA. I tried 3 brands in total (velleman, 123print and charlies3D) Now i have some XT PLA from colorfabb which will need tweaking in the settings but my general impression is that PLA is not that big of an issue to print. And by the way with my k8200, the supposed “working settings” for the velleman PLA did not work that great for me. I had to tweak from the start and once I found a good setting I could use that on all the PLA’s I tried. You have to know that each printer that is build by the user will be a bit different. Big company’s that sell pre-assembled printers, pre-test them and you will know the settings supplied will work.
In the end you will always have to tweak with self-build open source printers, and I don’t see that as a bad thing, but if you don’t want to tweak, you don’t buy a open source printer
i also got some 1.75 PLA from 123inkt.nl, they sent me a wider spool that looks too big for the spool holder, also the spool had a knot loop in the wire, causing the extruder to halt. something to watch out for. But at €20 for 1KG it’s pretty affordable and the results are ok with the basic test prints here.
