VM8201 can not read SD card

Hello Everone,

Stand alone 3D Printer Controller VM8201 will not read the SD card.

I used Slic3r to export the gcode to my SD card.

Can any one show me in a picture what their device looks like when it is working?

When I insert or do not insert the SD card with the gcode the display shows the same information.
The first screen shows SD—%
Then I select the SD card and the screen will go blank for 2 seconds.
If I select “no card” it will show a possible file, but nothing in it.

What can I try?

Thanks,

Pumpkinspice

Hy,
your sd card must be too big or not compatible.
I had the same problem with a 32 and 64 gb card.
Try with a smaller one

Hi,

Are you putting G-Code on the SD card?
Not STL files right?

Hello,

I am using a 4gb card, and another one I tried, but I can’t find it now.

I added both stl and gcode to try.

Can’t read anything.

Thanks,

Pumpkinspice

Hello,

You are just putting the G-code files in the root directory correct?
Have you tried pressing the reset button on the of the VM8201 after you install the card?

Yes, I added the gcode to the SD card.

Yes I pressed the reset button many times.

Maybe I can scare it into working. Threaten its life or something.

Ok,

I looked a little closer at your pictures.

Try the following.

From the info screen

Push the knob
Scroll to “Print from SD” Not “Init. SD-Card”
Scroll to G-Code file
Push knob to select
Display will return to info screen

Hope this helps

Make sure you haven’t missed soldering any of the pins into the board
Make sure the SD card is formatted as FAT file system (not exfat or ntfs)
Make sure to use 8.3 filenames

Don’t bother uploading them using Repetier. It’s a serial connection and I’ve found it to be too slow to bother with and completely unreliable.
Put the card in an SD card reader directly into your computer.
Slice with slicer of choice
Save to SD card as “test.gco”
Eject SD card from computer
Insert into printer
Init card
See if that works.

p.s. Files don’t need to be added to the root of the SD card, I’ve got a bunch of calibration stuff in a folder called calibration and it prints just fine from there.

Hello Everyone and thanks for your help.

Its 2016 and I’m still trying to get this to work.

 1. I shortened the name of the gcode so its less then 8 characters.
 2. Reformatted the SD card to make sure its FAT
 3. The card does work because I can save pictures and other data on it.
 4. I am trying an 8g card. Not to big.

There is no “Print from SD” option on the screen.

I can control the heat and send the board back to home space. So know its connected.

Any other ideas?

Important to note I did install version 2 of the software on the board correctly so it should support the controller.

Thanks.

Hi,

I was having the same problem and came here hoping that your post helped me out. AND IT DID!!!

How it worked for me:

 1. SD Card as FAT32
 2. Filename with 3 chars only
 3. Pressed knob, went to “No SDCard” option and when inside, accidentally pressed the reset button. When it came back the “Print from SD” had replaced the “No SDCard” option.

It’s printing right now from the SD…

Happy days

Thanks for the help

I have done all the previous described steps.
All commands from the stand alone seems to work, I formatted the sd-card, used short names, sliced it with repetier v1.6.1

but… no go!

Do you have a different SD card to try?

I did try it with 3 different sd-cards. Writing the file (after slicing) with a short name on the computer to the sd-card works fine.
I formatted the sd-cards several times
I re-re-rechecked the soldering points.
I re-installed succesfully the firmware
I resetted several times
The display works fine for all functions, except for the SD-card… Still “NO CARD” on the menu
