VM201 not working outside my LAN

Hello,

I am living in Belgium and my provider is Telenet.
I upgraded my VM201 with the latest firmware: build1342.

“My telenet” tells me that VM201 (with his Mac-address) is connected with the Telenet router via “Netwerkkabel RJ45”

Telenet settings for “IPv4 Firewall and Port forwarding” are:
“blokkeer gefragmenteerde IP paketten” : not active
“Firewall” : active
“UPnPactief” : active

"local IP adress" :192.168.0.xxx
  start port : 9760
  end port : 9760
  protocol :"beide" (TCP & UDP)
Status : active

If mMy android is connected via my local WiFi (Belkin), the connection works fine.
If my second computer is connected on local Wifi via Belkin, the connection works fine.

When I connect either the Android or my second computer via “Telenet Homespot” on internet, I cannot control VM201: when I try to connect I see “connection failed with error 10060”

What is preventing the external connection with my VM201 ?

Thanks for your answer!
Th Coppens

Instructions for Telenet are explained in the user manual
velleman.eu/downloads/0/user … _vm201.pdf

As I stated in my first questionnair,

  • VM201 is correctly installed (because it is functionning within my LAN),
  • telenet modem (wireless modem 3.0 (DOCSIS) with EURODOCSIS 3.0 technology) is configurated as said in your user manual (cfr; first message with the settings)

but, …

When I try to connect via Telenet homespot (i.e. via internet)
The software tells me: “connection failed with error 10060”

Again: what can be gone wrong?

To all members:

The service of Vellemann is null!

I found the solution due to logic thinking, not by the help of Velleman.

The question is the good choice of port address:

  • The adress showed by VM201 is my internal (LAN) address, in my case 198.168.0.xxx

  • This address is given to VM201 by the Telenet modem: (In my installating, VM201 is connected by a cable to the Telenet modem)

  • So, I have to address the VM201 trough my external telenet address (WAN configuration) 74.227.xx.xxx, specifying the port 9760. This port will connect VM201 with the internal address 198.168.0.xxx (as set in the Port forwarding settings of Telenet).

So this problem is solved, and even when Telenet changes the external address 74.227.xx.xxx into something else as 74.227.yy.yyy , I can consult MyTelenet in order to obtain the actual address.

So,

When I am home, I can connect VM201 adressing 198.168.0.xxx
When I am anywere, I can connect VM201 addressing 74.227.xx.xxx

This is logic, why Venneman support was not willing to help me?
Error 10060: Connection timed out.
A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or the established connection failed because the connected host has failed to respond.
In your case it will probably be because “the connected host has failed to respond”.

We will need to know more about your network because it is still unclear.

  1. What routers do you have?
  2. How is everything connected? (= What is connected to what?)
  3. For the routers: What IP address do they have and what IP addresses do they give out?
  4. For the devices: What IP address do they have?
  5. How do you test outside of your local LAN (= ‘from the internet’)? And what IP address do you use for that test?
When I am home, I can connect VM201 adressing 198.168.0.xxx

This is logic, why Venneman support was not willing to help me?
It is very difficult to help with network troubleshooting without any information about what is connected to what, what IP addresses everything has, and what IP addresses you are using to test. Had you told about the IP address, we would have noticed the problem quite immediately.

Nonetheless, I will have the manual adjusted, because it is not clear that the external IP address of your router should be used when connecting from outside your network. To me this is obvious, but for 99% of users, this is not evident.

You can know your external IP address by visiting for example whatismyipaddress.com/

Supposing that 99% of the users know what a support-team knows is a obvious bad supposition: it would make a support team obsolete!

Thomc,

I will make your live a little bit more difficult,

why don’t you use DDNS, so that you don’t need to use your ip address but register you on a public DDNS service and link your ip address to a dns name.

Thomc.xxxx.xxx (xxxx.xxx the dns provider)

This would prevent you the need to look each time for the ip address if telenet changes the external ip address, you run a service so that each 3 hours you will check the external ip address and if this has changed it will update the dns mane with the new ip address.
