Velleman K8055 and Windows 8.1 Failure to Communicate

Hi Group,

I’m just finishing up swapping my old Windows Vista 32bit observatory computer for a new Dell Inspiron 3000 64bit, using Windows 8.1.

The new 64bit computer will not (for the most part) recognize the Velleman board. Although the first night I tried it, it did connect after several mis-tries. Now it consistently refuses to connect. Interestingly, the old Vista recognizes the Velleman and runs the operation just fine.

From the Device Mgr, I get the following:
A) New 64bit Inspiron ----
under Universal Serial Bus Controllers
"Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)
The computer looks for a more recent driver, but says the current one is most recent.

B) Old Vista 32bit -----
under Human Interface Devices (both lines below)
HID Compliant Device
USB Human Interface Device

For the new 64bit Inspiron, I’ve placed the K8055.DLL (v4) from the kit CD in the Windows/SysWoW64 directory. I have not loaded any drivers or any Velleman software other than the mentioned DLL file.

I am finding the same behavior on my home Dell Windows 7 computer. It also rejects the K8055. Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanks,

Mark

If the LED LD8 stays on, it indicates that the USB enumeration process fails and the PC doesn’t detect the card.
One solution may be to use external USB HUB.

Hi Support,
Thanks for you quick reply.

The LD8 blinks 3 times and then goes off. I have tried both a direct computer connection and through a powered hub. Neither works.

I will review the various discussions to see if there are solutions.
But before I go too far down those rabbit holes, I do have a question.

Is this possibly a case of Old Age? Not mine, but the card. Here is how mine is marked:
Top Left: K8055 USB Experiment Interface Board
Btm Cntr: P8055-1, Velleman 2003
This card was commissioned around mid 2009.

I see that your current configuration is the K8055N.

The sales of the K8055N started 2012.

Does this then suggest anything regarding the two versions?
