Using smaller Filament

Hi All, Don’t know if this is the right section for this question. Can I use 1.75mm filament instead of the 3mm? What mods are needed to se the smaller filament?
Thanks in advance.

The K8200 uses 3.0mm filament.
1.75 would require a lot of changes to the hardware, software and firmware.
Some are using the ED3 hotend.
I think that would allow you to use 1.75mm
You will need to search around here

As the K8200 extruder is made for 3mm filament changing the hotend alone will not work.
You would also need a new (different) extruder.

I use a E3D V6 3mm hotend by now with a self made extruder inlay to print flex materials too.
Why do you want to go for 1.75mm?

No special reason for changing to 1.75, just really querying if it is any better. Some suppliers I have seen do not seem to stock 3mm, 1.75 seems to be more popular.
I am thinking of changing to the E3D V6 hot end and before buying a 3mm I wanted to see about the 1.75 option.

I have also considered changing to 1,75mm filament, as the 3mm filament ABS does not extrude well through a 0,3mm nozzle (this in the quest for higher quality prints). The standard extruder may not work on 1,75mm Filaflex, but what about ABS? Is it worth a try?

The problem as appears to be that extruding 3mm down to 0,3mm is an area reduction of 100:1, whereas 1,75mm to 0,3mm is 34:1, which should make it much easier on the hobbed bolt, no?

Best wishes to all for 2015,
Wally

It looks like 1,75mm is going to be a new standard size because noozles are getting smaller.
But i don’t think it’s a good idea to “upgrade” to 1,75mm just because it seems to be the “future”.

However, if you like to switch to 1,75mm, i think the cheapest way would be printing new inlets for your Extruder. There are already a few modded inlets to print flexible filament. Maybe you need a new hobbed bolt.

I wouldn’t recommend to switch to a bowden setup because you won’t be able to print flexible filament and you would need more retraction.

I agree to the max!
But i don’t think going for 1.75mm filament wil make such a big difference.
Maybe if it comes to uneven filament diameter, wich has possibly less effect on 1.75mm filament.

If you want, look at my part at thigiverse. it comes with the 123d files to tweak: thingiverse.com/thing:548827
Should be relatively easy to adapt it to 1.75mm.
