Using K8200 for CNC / Engraving

Hi All,

I am looking at buying the K8200 for use as an engraving / CNC machine.

I plan to CNC / engraving thin Aluminium and Plastic sheet for front panels.

I also want to mill the copper from blank PCB’s.

Is the K8200 suitable for this purpose ?

I am planning on using a dremal either a corded or my cordless one.

What are the mods I need to make ? (Thread links would be appreciated)

Just a bit confused with the plethora of info on this site :frowning:

Regards,

Kat.

Hello Kat,

Please take a look at my post!

Kind regards,

Hi kat,

you probably already know Boris Landonis post about his “official” CNC mod of the 3drag/K8200. As you can see, it is possible to engrave PCBs with the printer, however, I’d like to suggest a few upgrades or possible pitfalls:

  • the M8 Z rod is prone to backlash. Not a problem while printing, but really bad for CNC when precise downwards movements are a must there.
  • X and Y are belt driven, which results in high speeds, but low force. For engraving of “soft” materials, it is obviously ok (Boris mod), but milling deep cuts etc. would be a different story …
  • Switching the Dremel from the controller board requires some changes in hard- and/or software. The E stepper driver and both heater outputs would be free to use in such a configuration.

Cheers,
