Teach me to troubleshoot K1823

I purchased and assembled a K1823 1A powersupply, my first ever circuit board project. It worked well, until I accidentally put it down on a piece of metal – while powered on. So there was this buring smell and the circuit breaker on my 18v ac power supply tripped. Let every thing cool off for a while and the circuit breaker kept popping.

What testing procedures should I follow to get this back in operation? I would like to learn more and figure this would be a good opportunity.

We’re sorry, but we are sure you’ll understand that teaching troubleshooting techniques is not a service we can offer on this forum.
The quickest, cheapest and most reliable way of fixing this circuit is to simply replace the LM317 and the four 1N4007 diodes.
