Switch Z-Axis, what things do I need?

When I assemble my Printer, the thing that goes on the Z-Axis motor was kind of loose, and the only thing that makes from slipping is that tiny screw.
I did print a new holder, because it was pretty wobbly, but then I installed it, the z-axis just slipped and was not moving, and I can’t tighten the tiny screw anymore.

So, if someone can provide a list with things needed to replace the Z-axis (with names, so I know what to say in the store  ) and what things i can print for my self.
Iv’e seen some using a much more sturdy threaded bolt, and it was kind of that I had in mind.

Hi christopher,

where approx. are you located? Within the EU? Or US?

kuraasu, I’m from Sweden.

Hi christopher,

I’d recommend you start by getting a flexible coupler for your Z axis, like this one for example. Probably they’re also available in one of the RepRap stores or any good hardware supplier in Sweden, as well as in many EU-based (thus customs-free) online store. 5 mm & 8 mm is the size you need.

This will help you to get your motor and Z rod connected again (and better, with reduced Z wobble), so you’ll be able to print again. Then you can fabricate further parts needed for e.g. changing the rod to a trapezoidal one.

Trapezoidal rods are mostly used in TR8x1.5 or TR10x2 dimension. Trapezoidal nuts are usually available in steel or red bronze (lower friction) and 22 mm OD cylindrical shape, so you’ll need some adapter to fix such a nut to the Z axis carriage. See also here for the differences between TR8 and 10.

If you already know what variant you want to built, you can get the trapezoidal stuff at the same time as the coupler, but the latter is likely the more important part at the moment.

Thanks kuraasu, I will check with my local hardware store tomorrow!

Hi qweqweqwe,

that could be rather easy, see e.g. here. Search keywords: “flex coupler 5 mm 10 mm” or “motor shaft coupler …”. Possible ball bearings with ID 10, OD 22 would be 61900, for example.

I made a little flat part on my motor shafts with a dremel tool.
You don’t have to tighten the screw very hard anymore to prevent slipping.
These tiny screw are damaged easy by over tightening them. Or worse, stripping the threads out of the aluminum pully’s
