Support Material Stops

Hello,

I was printing an object with an ooze shield today, but after a few layers this shield stopped working. I was using a shield in favour of a wipe and prime tower because they always seem to fall over and leave a stringy mess on the object.

I am using white PLA with white HIP support at temperatures of 190°C and 225°C respectively, with a layer height of 0.2mm.

The nozzle did not require unblocking for the next thing I printed so I don’t really understand why this is happening.

Thank you in advance for any help.

To print HIPS you need to use the ABS profile.

I am using a modified ABS profile with a lower temperature because the HIP keeps oxidising - causing black marks on my models - and because the heater struggles to get to that temperature. It shouldn’t matter because the glass transition point of poly(styrene) is around 107°C. Nevertheless the same issue occurs when using the default temperature.

Is there anything else I could try?

Thanks.

Did you check the length of the PTFE tube inside?

Does the same thing happen when you switch the materials around (PLA in HIPS extruder and other way around.)

Thank you for the response.

I was very careful to make sure the PTFE tube inside the hot end was the right length, but out of interest how might that cause the issue?
I do not currently have access to my printer but when I do I will update this post with the result of swapping the materials over.
