Subtle Layer Shifting

Hello,

I appreciate that the layers will not line up perfectly and there will be a small shift in the layers. I have a few prints where there is the occasional layer that moves more than usual, creating a very noticeable ridge on the piece. The frequency of this occurring appears to be proportional to the area of a layer. What might be causing this behaviour, and how do I fix it?

A picture would be helpful.

Is it a real layer shifting (i.e. the upper layers are shifted too - on top of the shifted one) or just a wider layer.
