Strange noises

Hi all,

I got the Vertex working, but not like it should…

When I press the autohome function it functions (most of the times). Then i need to calibrate the bed, with the move x-axi and y-axis function.

Then I leave the printer for a bit and then it starts to make a strange noise that gets higher in pitch (like a capacitator that is going to blow), then it stops suddenly followed by a step from the x-axis stepper motor.

I found that when it starts making the noise and i disconnect the x-axis stepper motor connector then the sound stops.

Anybody an idea what this might be, and how to resolve this?

Thanks in advance!

P.s. Printing with printer works, it prints a layer then it stops prints a blob and then start printing the second layer on the wrong place…

I really would like to print!!!

Hello Markk,
it will work. Did you checked stepper driver boards Voltage settings? http://manuals.velleman.eu/article/1-frequently-asked-questions-39.html#SHIFTEDLAYERS .
When I tried to print something first time smallest belts was loosen. Case screws was screwed to tight, printhead didn’t moved easily. New firmware update is also must. Glas build plate holder screws was to loose glas moved while printing to left than to right side.

p.s I’m new to 3d printing but learning…

I think what you are hearing is the motors in hold mode.
The motors will lock for a little bit after moving.

Did you solve the issue with strange noise from the step motors? I just build my Vertex and everytime after home possition is activated I am experiencing the strange noise.

No friction in the X-Y carriage is paramount. Check if the axis are moving perfectly freely from side to side (You might want read the Wiki about it).

I found what is the problem. The vent which is mounted on the bottom is making vibrations. Even if I am holding it in my hand I can fell/hear this vibrations. If vent is turned around the vibrations disapears. I mount it back but the problem is that vent is not properly turned now. I think the bearings inside are broken and I would need a new one.

What is the role of this vent? Cooling the board, PSU…?

Thanks for your help,

Jurij

Yep, the bottom fan is obviously a problem. Mine stopped making a jet-engine noise after a few prints but you can’t hardly hope for it for everyone.
This fan is supposed to cool the mainboard and the PSU. I suspect it’s not that efficient.

My bottom fan made noise from first power-up. I replaced it with a used CPU fan of the same size.
