I have my Vertex for more than a year and I am very happy.
Sometimes I hear a rattling noise and than I know the print failed because of an x-as shift. I stop the print and start a reprint. Normaly this restart solved the problem. So I lived with it.
The last days the rattling noise come more often and I have to reprint many times.
I have search the forum and have done everything suggested. Cleaning, lubricating, adjustment control, the X and y-as movement are going very smooth with no obstructions. Everything is alright. All my Repetier settings are conform the advises from “Raby” and “Wrong Way”
At the moment I can’t print any object anymore without the rattling noise. I use for my latest tests a .gco file which I have printed more than 40 times last year but also this one fails to print.
This afternoon I detected that the rattling noise is coming from the x-as stepper motor. The moment of rattling is when the head moves to a new print position. I start to think that there is some “slip clutch” in the stepper motor which activate and generate the rattling noise. The other stepper motors doesn’t have this strange behavour.
Has somebody an advise how to solve this problem?
Could make a movie/audio recording of it?
Also check/adjust the reference voltage on the stepper driver.
See here on how to do it

Did you check the pulley on the motor? It might have come a bit loose.
I have measured the drivers:
X-Axis = 0.922VDC
Y-Axis = 0.916VDC
Z-Axis = 0.906VDC
All the drivers have a cooling body mounted from the beginning.
I have removed the X-Axis stepper motor and the pulley is not loose at all.
The recording of the sound is a little bit more challeging for me but I will give it a try.
Yes, got the rattling sound and the shifting on video. Look here.
At 1:20 in the video you hear the rattling sound and you see the shift in printing. I haven’t stopped the printer immediately so you can see the shifted result better. At the end of the video I show a detail of the print with the line of the shifting clearly in the picture.
I hope the video gives you a clue for my problem?
IMO it’s still caused by a slight misalignment. I’ve had this at the beginning even only one time in the middle of a 10 cm high print. Check the Wiki and apply this part of the procedure : “To know if you got it right, do the following : put the print head in the center of the printer ; remove the end cap of one of the lateral axis and slide the axis to release it from the ball bearing on the opposite side - try sliding the rod back in the bearing - if its not dead in the center of the bearing check where the rod is hitting the bearing : on the outer border of the hole --> the clamps are too far away from each other ; on the inner border means the clamps are too close from each other.”
We’re talking of a half mm or so.
YES “raby” your right!!
There was a little mis alignement at the both outer sides of the x-Axis. I had tested the middle position but that is clearly not enough. My first print after re-alignement has finished perfect.
Thanks.
You’re welcome. Happy printing.
Yes for sure.
I have already printed without any problem for more then 11 hours (five times a 2:20 hour print)
My problem solved within 24hour!!
Thanks again.
