IT is fun to build the six legged Allbot. IT doesn’t work so well with four batteries. Do you have a recommendation to feed the Allbot with 18 servos? Thank you!
We have developed a more powerfull battery shield. It should come out in the coming months
In the meanwhile you could use a power brick the power the allbot
5V/5A or so
Thank you for your quick response. I’m looking forward to new developments.
Hi!
I’ve built a six legged, 18 servos spider, attached 2 additional servos to move a camera… and I’m struggling to give him the power he needs.
Obviously with 4-AA batteries it’s not working, but I was able to test movement routines.
Now I’m using li-po batteries rated at 30C that should be able to deliver more than 30A at full charge. Since li-po deliver 7.4v, I’m using a BEC like this http://www.rcworld.co.uk/acatalog/Etronix-Li-Po-Regulator-5A-6V-Hard-Cased-CML_ET0556_5509889.html#SID=162 to switch voltage down to 6V. It’s limited to 5A but it should work as I could see in a previous comment here.
He can stand up, but he can’t walk, not even wave. I’ve seen the new li-ion shield is now ready to pre-order, and I would like to know if you have tested it powering 18 servos.
Another alternative should be one of these. http://www.horizonhobby.com/product/airplanes/airplane-accessories/other-accessories/castle-bec-pro-v2-cse010000401
Thanks!
Hello,
I’d like to build a Velleman AllBot hexapod, using six of the 3-servo legs (6 x AllBot 3 Servo Leg Option VR013), and an Arduino Mega (1 x Arduino Mega2560 Rev 3 A000067).
I don’t think it’s cost-effective to buy the four-legged AllBot kit (VR408), to not use the four 2-servo legs, so wondered if I can build this from the following:
2 x Allbot Plastic Part set B (PCB, Backbone, Feet) VR008
6 x AllBot 3 Servo Leg Option VR013
1 x Arduino Mega2560 Rev 3 A000067
1 x Allbot Li-Ion Battery pack & shield
1 x Arduino WiFi Shield with Antenna Connector A000089
1 x Arduino Axis Motion Shield A000070
? x Velleman Arduino Servo Shield(s)
I wonder if you can help me with the following questions:
-
What Servo Shield do I need (and how many, just one?) to control the 18 servos? I couldn’t see the right one on the Velleman website.
-
Is the above WiFi Shield the best method of giving the Mega WiFi networking?
-
Can I make the correct body/chassis using the Plastic Part set B? If I got two of them, can I extend the chassis for the hexapod in this way?
-
Will the combination of servos, shields, and Mega board work?
EDIT: just seen post from jesusotero - http://forum.velleman.eu/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=18953 - rather than buying the pre-built 3-servo option VR013, would it be better to get 3 x Allbot Plastic Part set A (Swing-Arm, Servo Mount) VR007 kit to make 6 x 3-servo legs but with strong / high torque metal-geared servos like these: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1143 ? Are the Allbot leg servos the “Micro Servo” size, or standard servo size? -
Will there be enough power from the LiPo battery to power everything adequately? How much headroom would I have (i.e. if in future I wanted to add another 4 servos)? (N.B. looks like this is an on-going issue that might get tested/resolved in the near future.)
-
Do I need additional cables/wire/consumables to put all this together? For instance, I see the VR013 legs come with wires preattached - how much ‘play’ is in them and how far will they stretch? (If I go with the dual-backbone and mount the shields centrally, I’m worried the servo wires from the outer legs won’t reach the Servo Shield in the middle.)
-
Anything else I’ll need?
Any advice gratefully received.
Many thanks in advance.
