Ripples in Sides

Hello,

On prints with straight vertical sections, I notice subtle vertical ripples running along the layers. This may be caused by the print head vibrating a little. What can I do to fix this?
My carriage alignment is good, and my belts are somewhat loose (held on with cable ties or they slip out). I am using Simplify3D for slicing.
Has anyone has this problem and found a solution?

Thanks,

Daniel

Hi,

check the screws holding the hotend, otherwise the only solution is to reduce acceleration. Printspeed mostly defines how far the ripples are apart.
Also for square parts it might help to rotate the object 45° on the printped. That way X and Y axis are slower and the ripple may be reduced quite significantly.

Happy printing

Can you post a picture? Lowering printspeed is the most efficient way to reduce this it might even be caused by having the head screws which have those plastic spacers. If you overthighten those, vibrations can cause the head to oscillate on certain tight 90 degree corners.

Kind regards

Sounds like this problem: http://forum.velleman.eu/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=16339

One reason can also be a slight misalignment. Not enough to cause layer shifting but enough to cause small vibrations when the head is traveling fast.

Thank you all for your helpful replies. I will look into each potential cause and see if it will make a difference. I have shipped the parts to a customer now, but I will take a photo of something else soon.

@minitreintje I don’t think that is the same problem as me because the ripples I’m referring to have amplitude in plane with the printer bed - ie they are caused by wobble in the x and y axis that is consistent throughout layers. I do get a bit of Z wobble though so I will look into the solutions given on that site. Thanks!
