Printing bed area upgrade

Hello, this printer is awesome but i only wished the printing area was a little bigger
is there any possible upgrade? a 30cm increase in the Y axis would be awesome, but, is that even possible?

Of course it’s possible but that would mean that you have to buy new frame profiles in that length as well as the rods on which the carriage slides. You will also have to replace the belt as you now need a longer one. Then you will need to rewrite everything for that axis (as the flat cable for the Y carriage is now too short). From there it’s only a matter of modifying the firmware to give it the new maximum values (printing volume) etc.
Note that you might run into the issue of a weaker frame as it gets longer - you will probably need additional feeds in the middle (not sure on how long you’re really going for).

So long story short: It’s quite a lot of work.

Hi tigox,

you mean 50 cm on the Y axis? Not without a major rebuild of the whole frame, as Tectu already wrote. Note that with the moving heatbed, the frame needs to be more than twice as large as the printable area in both X and Y direction.

Thank you for your answers :D, in that case is there any room to improve the area without having to modify the profile?

About 5 to 10 mm perhaps.

What materials did you want to use for printing?

Hum, 10mm would be good even if it’s little :stuck_out_tongue:
i am using PLA.

I’m curious about how you’d want to ensure a constant temperature over an enlarged print area. The stock PCB heater is, as we know, somewhat limited. Do you want to stick to the design, but with different dimensions, or use a totally different heatbed? Or do you plan to print without heater, at ambient temperature?

I was planing on replacing the stock heated bed with a RepRap pcb heated bed

There’s a 200 mm × 300 mm version of one of the standard PCB heatbed designs (called Mk3), but apart from that, everything else has to be custom made, no matter whether it shall be 200 × 210 or 200 × 500. What kind of objects did you want to print anyway?

Well, i build a lot of speakers and would like to start printing abs or pla speakers, and thus every inch is precious for box space, etc
