Printer gets 'disorientated' during print

I just want to pull my hair out! Everyday a new problem arises with this printer!
Today the silly thing seems to lose its place while printing and then just starts printing anywhere totally messing up the print. Sometimes it will print nicely for about 10-12 rows then go crazy other times it will do this on the 2nd row…
Why would it do this?

Likely your stepper motors lose steps.

What voltage did you set on the stepper drivers, 0.425v?
If so, set the voltage up to 0.55v

I have no idea what voltage the motors are set at. I need to get a volt meter to check that…

DO THAT IMMEDIATELY!

It’s absolutely important to set the stepper reference voltage!

If it is set too high you may loose steps or even OVERHEAT and BURN the stepper drivers!

Several issues can cause the X and Y position to become faulty during printing:

  • motors are loosing steps: check the driver voltage and set to 0.55V max as ichbinsnur suggested
  • pully is slipping: tighten the pulleys on the X and Y motors
  • nozzle hits the object due to warping
  • X and/or Y axis don’t move smoothly: check the force needed to move the bed when the belts are removed. Make sure the bearings are correctly aligned.

Regards

Well changed the voltage as best I could and so far it is printing very well… Thanks everyone for your help!

you’re Welcome!

Ok little update here. Changing the voltage did and didn’t solve my problem - The printer would print great for a bit and then the problem started again (printing nice for a few layers then losing it’s place and printing in the wrong place) I noticed that if I let it cool for a while it would print well for longer so I have now got a fan blowing on the PC board (The controllers for the X & Y motors got rather hot) and the problem has not happened again!
So once again thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

If you get your stepper drivers hot just glue some small heatsinks on them.

Did you set the voltage for the steppers to 0.55?
This voltage works best.

Yes I did set the voltage of all steppers to 0.55 but it still gets hot…

As i said earlier, just glue some small heatsinks on the driver chips.
I did so too and mounted the board in a fan housing.
That also reduces the risk of loosing steps due to overheating motor drivers.

Parts are quite cheap. 4mm fan for the housing and heatsinks with heatglue cost me about 10€

Hello,
I’m new here. I can be bad English and use the Google translator.
I have the same problem. With the driving voltage I understood, but
where can I set the drive voltage ???

Thank You

Yours sincerely.

Hallo,
ich bin neu hier.
Ich habe das gleich Problem. Mit der Treiberspannung habe ich verstanden, aber
wo kann ich die Treiberspannung einstellen???

Danke

Hello wifif

Here is a german manual on how to adjust the stepper dirivers :

Thank you for the quick reply

You’re Welcome!
Gern geschehen.
cheers,
