Printer cant upkeep Extruder Temperature

Hello!

I recently have installed a RepRapMK3 heated bed.

Because the original 150W PSU is not strong enough I exchanged the original PSU with a meanwell RSP-320-12
( velleman.eu/products/view/?id=414920) I also bought this from Velleman. This is a 12V PSU with 320 Watts.
Should be plenty enough for powering the K8400 with a heatbed.

Everything seems to work, heat bed heats up nicely but i have noticed that my extruder needs alot more time to heat up then it did before.

I print PLA on 200 ° and during prints the temperature drops steadily towars 179 / 180 °. As if the extruder heater cannot keep up and doesnt get enough power to keep it at 200° .

Would anyone have an idea what i could check/change ?

Thank you !

It probably can’t keep up. The original cartridge is AFAIK 33W @ 15V. So @12V it’s running at only ~26W

If you can, try to insulate it, so it isn’t affected by the fan as much. 180°C might also be enough to print PLA, as it’s more anyway because of the way the thermistor is placed.

If that’s not enough, either get a 15V PSU or a 12V cartridge.

Try PID tuning the cartridge, this will have totally different values than having it at 15V
Here’s more info about PID tuning Link

Damn I really wasnt aware of the original 15 Volts !

Maybe an easy way to fix it is to install both PSU’s? The original one for the Mainboard/extruder. The New one only for the heatbed. That should simply work right?

Yeah that should work to.

Thanks for the help guys.

I seme to have an other problem now but i will open an other thread for that
