Performance with no input

Here is a picture of an EDU09 transientrecording with noting attached to the input. There is a lot of disturbance.
Is that normal?

Thank you.

We assume that you have shorted the input?
If it has been left open, it is quite normal that the unit picks up noise…

The input wasn’t shorted. I am just wondering if there is an explanation for the periodicity and the high peak levels of around 3V of the noise.

I only see peaks of about 500 mV, not 3 Volts.
This is quite normal. Besides the shorting of the input, you also need to know that for best measurements, you’d better use a screened measurement cable.

For lack of better terms.

There is electronic trash in the air.
It can come from lights, motors, radio stations, power grids and the list goes on.

Your scope is doing what it was designed to do.

If you put your finger on the positive end of the probe you will become an antenna and amplify all of the trash in the air.

All right. Thanks for your replies.
