… now im battle’ing my printer to get a grip on my new filament, seems to get no grip on it, used the 5m roll for testing, but the extruder wont take the new 1kg roll … same stuff, both pla… dont get it!

Hi,

Nice video of building your printer, looks funny that way.

I also noticed that it is not really easy to feed new filament into the extruder. The problem is that usually the filament is not straight but bent (because of the roll). So when using a new roll, I cut off the first centimeters (about 4-5 or so). Then I slightly bend the filament in the opposite direction, straightening it a bit.
Then release the butterfly bolt and puth the extruder bearing clamp back. Now it should be possible to push the new filament right into the extruder. If it doesn’t enter, try to make it straighter.

Hope that helps…

I had trouble feeding new filament after the 5m roll, too! Somehow the rest of the black filament blocked the path because it was so bent. I ended up taking the extruder head apart and removing the rest of the filament by hand. After I put it back together, the new filament went in fine.

I had the same problem. My first filament change took me more than 1 hour. :frowning:

I tried to insert the beginning of the new filament directly at the end of the old filament as described in the manual, but this didn’t work at all. After some tries, the extrude motor had grabbed the new filament and it was going in, so i thought it was ok… until i saw the filament coming out somewhere on the left side of the extruder. :-x

The main problem is: after the end of the old filament has passed the extruder screw, it will not be transported any further, and will remain stuck. The only way to get the new filament in is to take a straight rod with 2… 2.5 mm diameter to press the remains of the old filament through the canal so that the hole on top of the teflon tube will be free and then the new filament can go inside this hole.

I think the instructions are wrong on how to continue feeding with new filament. It is not possible for the end of the old wire to get further into the extruder once it has passed the extruder screw. Only by chance the new wire will meet the end of the old wire precisely on the head and push it in.
I had to find this out the hard way and wasted more than an hour trying to feed in a new wire following the instructions.

Hi,

don’t wait for the filament to disappear into the extruder! Pull the last 10cm out of the extruder and the feed the new roll.
You will be able to get it past the extruder screw. Next turn the screw clockwise until you notice some resistance.
Works fine for me.

Good Luck.

Instructions:
First heat the extruder to a suitable temperature (PLA = 190°C), extrude a small bit by hand (turn the large gear clockwise), release the butterfly bolt, push the EXTRUDER BEARING CLAMP back and in a smooth motion pull the filament out of the extruder. Now you can feed new filament in, tighten the butterfly bolt a bit and extrude until the nozzle is filled with the new material.

I think they are talking about changing the filiment while printing

If necessary you can pause printing
