Mk164 remote

This is a desperate attempt to redeem myself on the eyes of my family - OK, my wife.

After a successful 5.1 install in our living room (twenty years at the sharp end of the touring music industry was enough to make it fairly easy) my wife decided that it was time to update the TV and system in her home office space.

Installed a 32’’ LG LCD with DirectTV and bought a ‘gamers’ remoteless 40w Cyber Acoustic 2.1 ‘multimedia’ rig, working on the assumption that I could control the volume from either the satellite box or utilizing the ‘speakers off/variable output’ option on the TV.

System input is a 3.5mm stereo plug y-ed from two RCAs.

Much to my chagrin, it turns out that - unlike my previous cable company’s box - no DirectTV box has a variable volume output; all volume is directed to and controlled by the TV. Needless to say the audio out on the TV is also fixed.

This leaves me looking for a remote controlled volume. I did find the mk164, which seems to fit the bill perfectly, but can it be operated using the Direct TV remote?

I fear for my life should another remote enter our house…

If this ‘Direct TV’-remote is a learning remote, then it is probably capable of grabbing the code from a Velleman IR remote such as the K8049 or MK162.
