MK158 Serial utility problems

I have a working MK158 kit, which I want to connect to my computer. The goal is to have it run directly from the computer for an embedded application.

Two issues I am trying to resolve:

  • Right now, I am getting an error when I try to start either of the serial text utilities. The error message is “Run-time error ‘8002’: Invalid port number”. When I click OK to close the error message, the program halts (doesn’t even start).

  • I am certain that I saw somewhere (product literature, manual, etc.) that I could short out one of the switches (s3?) to put the unit in a “receive” mode, which would allow me to continuously send character streams through the serial port. Now that I have built the kit, I cannot find the reference.

Any help would be much appreciated!

I think it does that when you don’t have any (free) serial ports. Do you see any COM ports in your Device Manager? Is there another application that could be using them?

I agree with VEL448. Either the COM port is not present, not working, already used or it has a port # that is not supported by the software (larger than 4). Regarding the bridging of the key, press the ‘HELP’-button of the software for ‘how to’-instructions.
