Looks like a k4040 but ....?

Hello there,

Two weeks ago I purchased a valve amp which looked like the k4040 on the outside, but appears to be an earlier model. It is equipped with EL34 valves.
The two main boards are marked P4000A’2, and there are no led indicators on these boards.
However, it was a good price, so who cares.

After using the amp for about an hour there was a short burst in two of the right channel valves (V2 and V3).
Right channel stopped working, but both valves kept on glowing.
After opening the housing I saw 8 burned resistors, marked J and corresponding to mentioned valves.
Also the fuse on the right hand side of the capacitor board was blown, a 1a slow fuse.

As I have no schedules or manual of this amp I wondered if you can provide me with a possible solution. Just replacing the resistors and fuse doesn’t look the right way to me.

Do you also have some more information about type, possible age of the amp and the specifications ? As I have nothing right know, any information might help.

Or, is there something like an upgrade kit to improve the amp ? Or to improve the looks, it is possible to order the chrome socket covers ? Off course only if they will fit.

Thanks in advance for your help

This is a K4000, it has been discontinued 10 years ago, and it has been replaced by the K4040. The main amp circuit is identical to the K4040.
There are no upgrade kits.
You can find the original manual here (third party link)

This site also features a lot of usefull info regarding this amp.

Thanks, indeed this is a great help, I red that he suffered the same problem and solved it by changing the resistors and placing them a bit above the board. Does this solution deserve a “Velleman” ok ? But this site also states that he ordered a set of rings to cover the sockets? Is this still possible ? Thanks again for your quick reaction

This solution is ok, however, we’d also recommend to change the tubes.
Order code for rings: CKRING35 (small) & CKRING45 (large)
Sorry, no direct sales, you must turn to a Velleman dealer.
This is not a stock item (long delays). Not all dealers are willing to order them.
