K8098:Audio Analyser Request

Hi,
I recently ordered the K8098: Audio Analyser kit, however the Logic chip (33fj32gp-202) does not function properly.
The chip is sourcing around 800mA when connected to the PCB, when taken out, the power supply only supplies around 5mA to the board, so I’m fairly sure the chip is at fault.
I have searched on your site to order another chip but there are no available spare parts.
I was hoping I would be able to order one, is this at all possible?
My college may also be able to supply me with the chip but I would need the hex file for the audio analyser to download to the board, would it be possible to get this also?

Thanks for your time.

Check your soldering joints and component placement and polarities. Chance is very small that the IC is broken. In some cases it is possible to order a new pre-programmed IC but Velleman will never send the HEX-file.

Cheers for the response, I’m almost sure it’s the IC though.

The power supply only supplies ~800mA when the chip is connected to the board, otherwise there is a minimal current reading.A functioning chip shouldn’t be taking in this much current.

Voltages of ~3.3v were read on pins connected to VDD, which conformed with the voltage regulator’s output voltage and also with the operating voltage of the IC (3-3.6v).Both these voltages were obtained from their respective data-sheets.

If one of the outputs of the IC are short circuited, it can draw lots of current… Believe me, the biggest chance is a short circuit outside of the controller…

Well the only other connections to the chip are line in (haven’t checked a signal here yet) and the rest of the pins are connected directly to the LCD, which isn’t connected to the board at the moment.Would a short circuit at these connections still cause the PSU to draw this much current?

Probably more than 1 short circuit or component inversed, …

If you are positive that the controller is defective, you can return it for inspection/exchange.
In this case, please return it to:
