Built this K8095 MP3 player, but had really bad luck with it. Not due to poor quality from Velleman 'cause in my opinion this is a really nice kit.
I suspect a stupid piece of leftover wire killed my kit, so here’s my story
At first the MP3 player seemed to work fine but then I noticed the right channel had no audio.
I used the up-button to increase the volume and at that time some distorted noise was audible on the peaks of the audio.
While troubleshooting all of the sudden a distorted sound was heard on both left and right channel and the LED backlight of the display flickered.
I powered off and started testing components one by one, I found out all the integrated circuits are broken, even my brand new 32GB SD card is broken.
On further investigation I discovered a small piece of wire on the PCB, almost invisible at the base of C18. It probably ended up there after cutting and remaining glue from the paper tape made it stick there. C18 is the DC-blocking capacitor of the right channel audio signal, so I suspect the wire shorted C18 and a DC component was passed to the audio amplifier (hence the distorted sound on the right channel). I’m not sure what happened next but I think the audio amplifier shorted out internally due to the overload from the DC component, by shorting it passed the supply voltage (12V) back to the MP3 decoder and the other integrated circuits blowing almost everything.
Confirmed dead are: PIC, MP3 decoder board, SD card
Suspected to be damaged: audio amplifier (outputs only half volume on the right channel when injected with audio), LM317 (measures sometimes the correct 3,3V and sometimes around 10V)
Unknown: LCD Display
On the Velleman website I see there’s no spareparts available for this kit.
Does anyone have experience with sending a kit with such extensive damage back to Velleman for repair?
With almost every active component on the board broken I guess it’s going to be expensive right?
Maybe I better just buy a new kit?
