K8072

I am new to your site so be gentle! I am designing a new product and wish to use the K8072 DMX 1 channel controller. I see 2 things that will need to be modified for my needs.
First of all, the “XLR” type connector is a 3 pin whereas the USITT DMX 512 protocal is now, and has ALWAYS been, 5 pin. I know others have made devices with 3 pins before but this is still not up to industry standards. I see no problem in just using a 5 pin connector as the #4 and #5 pins are the "alternate: data lines in the standard anyway.
Second, and really the KEY issue is the Binary DIP switch. I need to change this to allow for a simple 3 element thumbwheel type address selection. Although I personally know how to count in binary…most customers will have a fit… and rightly so. The dip switches are a pain.
In my application the thumbwheel switch and all the LED lamps will be moved to the chassis of the new device and the board located a few inches away.
Please, If anyone can advise me as to how to accomplish this/ these revisions I would appreciate it.

Thanks SFX

As far as I know, there are no thumbwheel switches available that have binary outputs, to be compatible with dipswitches.
