K8061: How to install vista USB driver

I have bought two VM140 cards, and want to connect them to my HP notebook running Vista Home Premium (32 bits). I have downloaded the K8061_vistapack_2007v1.zip, unpacked it, and copied the K8061_C.dll and K8061_C.lib to replace the versions I had previously obtained from the CD-ROM.

When I recompile my application (which does work correctly on the computer of a friend of mine, which runs under XP), to make sure it is linked with the new K8061_C.lib file, and then run it, it fails to recoognize the K8061 board, and gives the “No Card Found” response (-2).

My suspicion is that this is because I did not install the USB driver, in the /driver folder of the vistapack zip file.

I have no idea how I should do that, though. The ReadMe file says I shoould “locate” the driver. I have no idea what that means. It seems to me that Vista should locate the driver, that I know where it is will not help Vista much. I am a completele ignorant where drivers are concerned, a ‘plug and pray’ guy.

What commands should I give to install those drivers? I see two DLL files in that /driver/x86 folder, but no similar files where on the CD-ROM. Please tell me where I have to move these DLLs or what I have to do in Vista to make these drivers replace the drivers it iss using now. (Probably taken from the CD-ROM)!

Indeed, it seems that you have wrong driver installed.
Here are the steps to update the driver if you have installed the original driver from the CD:

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.
Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
In Device Manager, Double click “Universal Serial Bus Controllers
Double click “K8061 USB Interface Board
Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
Click on Browse my computer for driver software.
Click on Browse and locate the driver folder.
Click on Next and follow the subsequent instructions given by the installer.

Thanks for your quick answer. Unfortunately the problem seems different from what I suspected.

The behavior is also a bit different. In the conto pnel there does not seem to be a “System and Maintanence”, but there is an icon called “System”. In it there is a shield icon marked “Device Manager”. When I open it and click “Universal Serial Bus Controllers”, there is no K8061 there. As an alternative to the USB controllers there is an item “Other Devices”. The “K8061 USB interface board” could be found in there, next to the icon of a console with a question mark printed on top of it.

When I click that, and browse to the \driver folder of the (unpacked) vistapack, and try to perform the install, I get the message:

“the best driver software for your device is already installed
Windows has determined the driver software for your device isup to date
K8061 USB interface board”

When I first browse to the \drivers\x86 folder, the response is the same.

Just for my understanding: I have the following files:

In \driver:
k8061.inf
In \driver\x86
WdfCoInstaller01005.dll
WinUSBCoInstaller.dll

Wen I should locate the driver, what should I actually locate? The inf or the dll files? Is the inf file a script that is automatically invoked by the wizzard that install the drivers? Is this wizzard smart enough to know that t runs on an x86 machine, rather than amd-64, and will it select the dll from the sub-folders accordingly? Are the actual drivers in the dll? On the CD-ROM there were no .dll files, but .sys files and such, in the driver folder.

OK - you have now to uninstall the current driver.
Instead selecting Update Driver select Uninstall.
Also select the Delete the driver software for this device option on the Confirm Device Removal dialog box.
Then unplug and plug the K8061 and try to install the new driver.
You have just to locate the driver folder.

You’re viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, you won’t see the System and Maintenance link.
This is the easiest way to go to Device Manager:

  • Click the Start button,
  • Right click Computer,
  • Select Properties from the popup menu.
  • In the top left corner select Device Manager.
