No, Because the output responce is to slow.
I know this is an old thread but I have no problem controlling 2 character LCDs from my K8055. I am using 2 16x2 HD44780 compatible diplays in 4bit mode like this one:
It writes a little slow but it also makes a nice typewriter effect. I did make one modification to the board. I took out the ULN IC on the outputs and replaced it with links across the pins on the back of the IC socket. This connects the outputs of the PIC directly to the terminal blocks. I could have used pull-up resistors but this method gave me a desired and neater result seen as the LCD requires very little current.
