K8055 connection problem

Hi, I have recently bought a K8055 kit and assembled it. When connected to my PC nothing happens. My PC dosen’t seem to recognise that a device is connected. The LD11 lights up fine, but the LD8 dosent flash as it is suppose to. I have carefully checked all soldering and component orientation. I have also checked that the PIC is getting power and it gets 5V.

What else can i check to try and determine the problem? Is it likely that the chip/s are damaged?

Check the XTAL oscillator and it’s startcapacitors.
If these are OK, the PIC controller could be defective.

You can send this part by post, to us:

Velleman Components NV

We will send a new, tested part back to you.

Could you tell me the easiest way of checking the XTAL oscillator?

It is not easy to check the oscillation without an oscilloscope.
If you have, use 10x probe to check the oscillation from pin 10 of IC3.

If you haven’t, then you may try to measure the oscillation with a DVM. Set low voltage AC range and use a small capacitor (e.g. 10 pF) in series with the lead. If you get any reading then the oscillator is probably running.

I’ve experienced exactly the same problem - the power LED lights up, but there’s no indication of any USB connectivity on the board or through Windows.

If the card doesn’t give any reaction (LD8) you can return the card to your dealer for repair, they (or you can direct) send the card to us, but check the card first twice because of the distance Belgium-Australia.

I checked the board over and over and everything seemed attached and correctly mounted. I returned it to the dealer and they replaced it. Fortunately the replacement works fine.

Troy.
