K8048 PIC PROGPIC2.EXE not in download - cannot program

The “usermanual_k8048” specifies “PROGPIC2.EXE” to program the K8048 but this .EXE does NOT exist in the “PicProg2009_Rev_3_05” download. The PicProg2009.exe gives the error message “No Velleman Programmer connected to device” ! Do I need “PROGPIC2.EXE” or is the K8048 broken ? I tried two different PC’s with Serial Ports that work ! (Windows XT and Windows 7).

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Things to watch for on this kit.
The cable needs to be a straight through cable not a cross over or null modem.
The port needs to be a native com port USB to RS232 will not work.
Power supply 12 Vdc non regulated or 15 Vdc regulated.

Make sure PicProg2009 is set for the K8048 / VM111

Thanks, I just soldered up a “straight through” cable and tried it but same error. However the Read/Write blinks each time I select a function on the PicProg2009 (Load Hex File, Read/Write/Etc.

Check T3 Part number BC557

Yes, Yes - I had a BC547 in there, I thought the Transistors were all the same.
I unsoldered and pulled them, switched and now the board works !

Thank You soooo much !

Glad to hear that worked out.
I was just guessing.
Enjoy!

Now the Crystal Oscillator on the K8048 PICF627A Pins 15/16 stopped running. I replaced the Crystal no help. Power is good. Rest Switch works. Any ideas ?

Thanks

Tom K.

Do you have the jumpers on pins 3 and 4?
3077

Yes, it was working. I was able to run the Demo programs then I think something broke.
Can the configuration stop the oscillator ?

Tom

I really don’t know.
I have had a k8048 for a long time and only played with the demo programs.
When I had to replace my computer the new one did not have a native com port anymore.
I have been meaning to go to the computer junk shop to find an older one with all of the ports com lpt and XP but have not had the time.
You do have the option to use the internal clock on some chips (I think).
Try loading the demo program again to see if it still works.
That should tell you something.

Thanks

When the K8048 worked there was 4MHz Sine Wave on pins 15/16.
Now nothing, Power Supply is good, I swapped out the PIC and replaced the Crystal (with some difficulty)but no go.I’m pretty sure that’s why none of the programs load any more.
I tried all the Software combinations, Erase All, Write All, Configure etc.

The Read/Write blinks on the Load functions so the Comm end seems to be working.

Tom

You will need to check the continuity from the caps to the crystal to the jumpers to the IC.
Sounds like you have a bad solder joint or a broken trace.
Does the crystal start when you remove the chip?
Maybe it has an issue.

Long Story Short, I replaced the PIC with a PIC16F84 IC I had and it’s working again !

I have the Oscillator jumpers on and configuration set to _XT_OSC

Thanks very much for your help.

Tom

Glad to hear it’s working.
