I’m posting to see if any one has a real answer for the hundreds of us
that have the same issue with this board? All is in check 15v, 12v at serial cable, pin to pin etc. etc.

  • updated software, so on.

pci serial card on the pc is in check, etc. I actually mounted the board directly into the serial board on the PC
female to male, that did not work either.

Hopefully Radio Shack will take a return on my assembled board.
It’s not cost of the board but the time spent on troubleshooting is the killer.

The error message “K8048 not found at COM#” implies you are using the software ProgPIC2. This software uses a very basic way to detect the board, which you can simulate with a jumper wire (I just checked this). Just connect the TD pin to the RI pin (on a 9 pin serial connector that is pin 3 to pin 9). Click ‘Port’, COM# in the software and you will see “K8048 detected” in the Status box.

On the bottom of the K8048 board, you can see the trace connecting these 2 pins. I’m sure Velleman will do a good job checking the entire board for you, but if the jumper wire test doesn’t work, the problem is very likely the COM port.

Have you check the com port to see if it is using standard IRQs?

For COM 1 and 3 it should be IRQ 4
For COM 2 and 4 it should be IRQ 3

Also make sure these IRQs are not in use with anything else.

Thank you all for your replies.
I took out a old Dell laptop with a built in serial port, and of course works fine, read, write, etc
With old and new versions with software.

The PC I was using has a serial pci card, voltage reads 12 volts but will not work.

So I’ll use the laptop for now, running xp, (btw, I’m a Mac guy coming from the Arduino world trying to expand my knowledge of mp) so you can see how this would turn off Mac users.

But all in all it works. Would like it to work on o desktop though.
