K8020 - Relay RY9 does not fit PCB

Hi. I have a problem with the supplied part for this relay as it seems too big to fit on the PCB. The manual says part number VR5C122C. The supplied part is (SOKE) JQX-14FC-2C. It is not possible to drill new holes in PCB as this will break other adjacent tracks (particularly in the area of the relay contacts). Any advice on how I can overcome this problem?

Sorry, we are not aware of this problem and it has never been reported before.
Can you supply a link to a picture that clearly shows the exact nature of the problem?

JQX-14-… is the part number of the manufacturer. This is the Velleman part number VR5V122C. So this is the right relay.

Here is a picture of the problem:
.

For this picture I lined up the centre contact pins and the relay energising pins with their respective holes. You can clearly see that the NO and NC contacts are too wide for the holes in the PCB.

I thought of bending the pins in at about a 45 degree angle and sloping the holes from the component side of the board, but I am scared this may damage the relay’s contacts.

Very strange. Probably someone will have made a mistake and thought it was a VR5V122C (which you have on the picture), while the manual indeed states that it should be a VR5C122C.
Try to obtain the correct one, this quality kit deserves this ;).
Normally within a few hours someone at Velleman will help you further ;).

Sorry for the inconvenience.
This must be a one-off problem, as it has not been reported before.
Please supply an address, so that we can mail a spare relay.

Thank you VEL417 for your kind offer to send a replacement relay. I look forward to receiving it and completing this project.

However, I don’t seem to be able to send my address to you in a private message (or I don’t know how). I have sent it to the forum email address (the one I get the post notifications from). I hope this works. If not, please advise.

Also thanks to laserguy for adding some valuable information. All I can say is that you must have a ton of experience to be able to identify that specific relay from the photo. Well done!

Thank you for the compliment AG and you’re welcome. Good luck with this quality kit!

Please send your address to be dot velleman at support but then the other way round.

I have now received replacement relay by post (about 10 days ago actually) and made the time to complete this kit on the weekend. It worked perfectly straight away (including the replacement relay), so all is well.

Thank you Velleman. The Control Amplifier is now linked up to the K4040 valve amplifier I built some time ago and the combination sounds really good.

I see that he replacement relay posted to me is marked VR5V122C whereas the manual specifies the part number as VR5C122C. The part number in the manual might be a typing error??? The replacement part fits the board perfectly and seems to be the correct specifications. And more importantly, it is working just fine.

The hardest part in building this kit was soldering the valve bases onto the wiring pins (so that the valve bases were horizontal and at the right height)!

When soldering the LEDs in place, I found it useful to use the front plate as a template to hold them in place. With the front plate held in place by the push buttons, and the LEDS in their respective holes (held in place by Prestick) it was easy to solder the leads so that the LEDs were at the right height. I found that with the dimensions given, the LEDs protruded a little way through the holes. After final assembly I pressed them back with a slightly smaller metal rod until they remained flush with the front plate (as I am sure they are meant to be).

Having said that, this probably ends this topic.

Thanks once again to everyone who assisted.

Happy to read that everything works fine.
The relay is a pin-compatible replacement.
