K4003 - Getting a transformer for car

Hi,

I’m building a simple car audio system with the intent of connecting any audio device to my car’s speakers (mp3 players, ipods, cd players, etc). For that, I connected the speakers to a line out jack, and I now use it to connect the devices. However, since most of these devices have little to no sound amplification, I bought the K4003 to do the job for me. I assembled it successfully and it seems to be working OK. However, I can’t connect to my car’s battery, which provides 12V/42A, and the K4003 needs 2x12V/2A. My question is what transformer should I use to get this to work?

Thanks in advance

The K4003 needs a symetric power supply i.e. 2 x 12V.
In a car, there is only one battery, so there is no way of creating a symetric power supply. You will have to look for an amplifier that runs of 1 x12VDC.

The 4003 asks 12V for each channel (L/R). I can get at least one channel working, is that correct? If so, what transformer should I use?

Also, since they are independent channels asking 12V each, can’t I just connect it to the car batt twice, one in each channel?

No, The + and - 12 are needed for each channel, so it’s not possible.

If I connect both + and - to the same 12V source in parallel, they will both have the same voltage, 12. When I make connections in parallel, it’s the amperage that is divided, not the voltage, if I recall correctly =)

Final attempt: the K4003 does NOT run from a single supply and there is NO way of converting it so that it will!

All attempts to make it run from a single supply will most likely destroy the IC!

I guess if you wired an additional car battery up, and stuck it in the boot, you could get it to work.

You couldn’t be sure if the voltages of the 2 batt. are always still the same, if not, the amplifier will be damaged.

Doesn’t Velleman make a DIY car amp? hint
