How does the record function work on the HPS140i? And how long will it record for?

Record mode is when a very slow timebase is selected.
Slowest timebase is 1h/div. This allows you to record 25h at 10 samples/h

Presumably this must be with external power; or is there a power-saving battery-life extending circuit?

No, this is with external power.
