How to set up Cura?

Thank you all, this thread has been a great source of information for me.

I use Linux and have had to use a work laptop with Windows 7 to print with as RepetierHost crashes a little too often on Linux (for me at least). I’ve now ditched RepetierHost on my laptop and just installed Cura as a stand-alone solution.

I was having bad quality prints with Cura until I read the part about lying about the nozzle size.

Cheers
Jim

Adjusting the extrusion multiplier or filament diameter probably does the same thing. It is amazing how different peop0le get different results. I was fed up with my printer until I discovered that cura made far fewer travel moves and stays within perimeters for moves whenever possible. I use cura exclusively except for vases because slic3r does a much better job for vases.

I didn’t need to “fudge” any parameters to get good results from cura from the first time I tried it. I chose to adjust the extruder steps/mm in the firmware rather than lie about other parameters (for either slic3r or cura)

Hello guys, Im a new printer guy, because im not so satisfied of the models created I want to try printing with CUra.
Is it the file on the first thread still valid?
Or is there a better more precise setup?

Thx

I obtained Cura by downloading the latest version of Repetier Host, which comes bundled with Cura. Download directly from the Repetier site, not from Velleman.

repetier.com/

I should point that only the latest Windows version comes bundled with Cura. The latest Mac version does not. (March 2015)

My experience was that after several months of tweaking Slic3r parameters I got acceptable results. Nevertheless, I tried Cura and immediately came to prefer it. It has far fewer tweakable parameters than Slic3R, but it gives me superior results nonetheless.

Thx Im downloading it right now. Is it the 1.06 right?
What about the setup for Cura?
Is Cura inside the repetier package? O do I need to download it externally?
Is slicer included also?
So first I slice with slicer then I use Cura right?
Sorry if I ask these questions but I just want to be sure that everything will work fine.

Thx

Both Slic3r and Cura are imbedded in Repetier 1.06, so they are not downloaded separately.

You use either Slicer OR Cura, not both.

Thank you, what about the setting, shall i put the same given by velleman?
Or are there better settings?
Thank you so much

I don’t think my setup file would be optimal for you. There are not that many parameters - fewer than with slic3r. I suggest you open the Cura configuration in its Repetier tab, and look at each parameter. You will recognize them I think. Decide whether the default is OK, or if you want to change it.

Your biggest problem will probably be with the starting and ending gcode. It doesn’t work to use the identical starting and ending gcode as you use for slic3r. I had to modify the slic3r gcode.

If you want. I’ll send you mine, but there is no guarantee you will want to use the identical starting and ending gcode that I use.

I tried a couple of test and wasnt a very good success, can I see your settings plz?
Even a screen can be enough.

Thank you

No, you can choose to slice with slic3r OR curaengine in repetier 1.0.6.
If you want i can post a link to my curaengine profile. Just note that the values are tweaked for my e3d v6, so you might need changing it.
The guys from repetier recently gave me a link to a development version with added finctionality.
They said it will come out to public about May.

I use Cura for slicing, and save it as .gcode
Then I import it in Repetier to print.

Why don’t you simpy use repetier 1.0.6? Curaengine is “builtin” there.

Thx for the info guys, within the next hours i will try to setup my printer with the above settings. I will use slicer and cura engine provided with 1.0.6 repieter host.

You can import the files using Repetier. Open Repetier and select the Cura Engine as your slicer. Click on the “configuration” button and it will give you the option to import and then save the files. You must do each file individually, and can save them under whatever names you like. Then you can modify the configurations and save them under different names in order to preserve the original files. You can have as many configuration files as you like - for example you could have one for a heated bed and another for an unheated bed.

You can also modify certain parameters in Repetier at slicing time, such as the layer thickness and percent infill. Then you won’t need separate configuration files for those settings.

Ok I found how to import them, I thought I have to modify the files with notepad…
Now Ichbinsur, which value shall I modify? Just the extruder temperatures?
