How to build a chronometer from scratch

For a project I need a simple chronometer that can be used on a big display.
*I need 2 (maybe 3) inputs; start, stop and reset.
*I need a big display, clearly visible for outside use. (the bigger, the better)
*there is only a small budget available

I am thinking about two options;

1.: I can use a laptop with an external large monitor where i can run an apliction as ex. online-stopwatch. The problem is the interface. I need 3 external inputs…

  1. : I can use a timer module. The problem is; how can I display my clock? Can i Start,stop, and reset the module from an external signal (remote or cable).

Suggest you read up about general circuits based on 555 IC anyone of em can be repurposed to your application.
