Hi,
I’m facing quite a serious problem. The resistance in my stepper motors is really high, so the force to turn them (powered off of course). When printing the whole printer is vibrating and shaking a lot and diagonal lines are more a zig-zag than a line (due to the choppy movement and vibrations). The bearings are all smooth and intact, the bed moves perfectly when not connected to the motors via the belts. When connected the movement is extremely choppy and has a high resistance. I’m guessing my motors are faulty, but I’m not sure.
Anyone have an idea?
What voltages did you set your stepper drivers to?
0.55v is perfect, any higher value will give a result as you mentioned and possibly damage the motors or drivers.
Do the motors get hot?
Just forgot :
Do the motors turn smooth if the belts are disconnected?
I set the motors to the correct voltage (not my first 3d printer) , drivers and motors do not heat up at all. However they do this in the unpowered and unconnected state as well, so I think its something mechanical.
I ordered two replacement stepper motors to exclude faulty motors, but I’ve never experienced something like this before…
Quite strange…
How many of your motors are affected by this?
Its most noticable with the x-motor, but y and z have it as well.
I will wait for the shipping of the replacement stepper motors and report back if this has resolved my issues.

OK! Fingers crossed!
Update: Problem Solved!!!
You were spot on with your suggestion to check the voltages, they were completely wrong, but you won’t believe what caused it.
Turns out my multimeter was broken showing me that i dialed in the correct voltage, but in reality it was far too low.
I measured my power supply and it showed me 18V, which simply can’t be true with a 12V supply, so I borrowed another multimeter from a friend of mine and it showed completely different results…
The motors were in reality set to ~0,32 V which is far too low, thus the choppy movement. I have now set them to ~0,54 V and they run smooth as hell like in my other printers!
And the x-motor had by far the lowest voltage, so it was most noticable with this one…
Thanks for your help, you were on the right track !!!
Nice to hear!
Happy printing!
