Filament spool judder

As the filament gets used up I find the spool sometimes starts juddering quite violently causing the whole printer to shake sometimes. Is that normal? After a few rattles it seems to settle down for a while. It seems as though the extruder occasionally needs more filament and has to give a sharp tug (can’t explain it better). I’ll try and take a video when it’s in full swing.
It could also be that the spool rolls on slightly and this occurs when the filament finally tightens up again?

So far I haven’t seen any negative influence on the print but it’s unsettling.

Can you record some video of that problem?

I’ll try - it’s quieter again now. I may just be getting paranoid when I hear new noises…

Oh dear…
around the time I posted the first message about the juddering it seems the filament snapped! Explains why it seemed to go smoother. Unfortunately I only realized after it had printe about 1cm without filament…

The filament snapped at the entrance to the extruder - I think between the lever & the feed pulley. How lomg would it print (roughly) to use whatever filament was left in the tube?
I couldn’t get a good picture so I scanned the break, but that’s not very clear either.

Is this a filament weakness or something else…

Ah should have read this one…http://forum.velleman.eu/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=13251

I realised (around 3am this morning) that as the filament is pushed through the tube and not pulled it didn’t use any of the filament in the tube after it snapped in the extruder. I dismantled the extruder this evening and I could pull out the remaining filament - it didn’t seem to be stuck at all in the nozzle. Let’s see what happens when I try to load the filament again,

I will definitely look at those retract settings
