Electronic Cicada (WSAK204) & Brain Game (WSG112) Not Working

Hi,
I’m having issues with assembling the electronic cicada and brain game kits. I’ve attempted two separate cicada kits and came across the same issue.

Electronic cicada:

  • Turns on, buzzes/flashes for a second, and then stops

Brain game:

  • Won’t turn on at all. I’ve used brand-new batteries and double-checked my battery holder connections. Also, the battery pack is different than the original and updated instructions for it.

Is there any troubleshooting guide to figure out what component(s) may be causing issues? I made sure to check the polarity of certain parts before soldering them on but I can’t tell where the issues might be stemming from or what area to focus on. I am using these for a college teaching lab and would like to be able to help students figure out why their circuits don’t work.

This is one of the cicada kits I soldered.

Hello @mmd

Can you share high resolution foto’s of the front side and back side of PCB for both kits.
This way we can check it further. At distance without being able to check the kit(s), it is almost impossible to say what is wrong. Most common problem is wrong polarity of component, or a bad solder (contact).

See below how to spot a bad soldering joint.

Here’s both cicada kits. Using a multimeter, I found out that, for both kits, Pin 11 of the IC chip is not producing any output and not sending any voltage to Wing 2. Is there a reason why I see that for both kits? Adding more solder to the pin connections hasn’t fixed anything.

Here is the front.
