With my printer ready for its first run I would be pleased to know whether the purpose of the fan is to cool the print as it progresses and when should the speed be reduced.

The fan is for cooling the printed part.
I highly recommend to print yourself a nozzle for it, to better direct the airflow.
If the heatbed is cooled down by the fan the print will come loose.
If and how much cooling is needed depends on the printed part.
You have to experiment with that.
Many parts don’t need cooling at all.
