Broken filament

Hi

After yesterdays printing, today, the filament had broken(!) halfway between extruder and filament spool. The filament is white. So my question is; anyone experience the same? and do the colour on the filament have anything to say? The filament also feel quite brittle(?).

Also when I fed the new filament, something happend below the hobbed bolt, that the new filament didn’t go down. But managed to drag the broken bit up and out of the extruder.

If you leave your filament in the printer and have the extruder positioned near the bed it is bent.
Especcially PLA tends to break after a while when stressed with bending.

I suggest to move the z axis up to 150mm after printing (helps to reduce the bending)
or unload it when not in use.

Wen not printing for longer times it is a good idea to store the filament in an air tight plasic bag or bowl
along with silicagel (dryer bag) to keep it from getting damp and get brittle.

cheers,

Christian

Like you I leave my printer loses and the filament breaks.
Because of the stress I have found that the PLA becomes brittle on the first part on the spool.
I have been cutting that part off before reloading the PLA.

Some plastic are more sensitive for that. I found that the black one breaks most often. If the printer is not used I always takes some windings off from the spool to keep sufficient curve. When I load the extrude I straighten the filament with a cloth soaked with hot water. I am also considering to design a tube with a heating element with is warming up the streched part of the filament somewhat.
.

Depends on color and supplier, but most PLA will break sooner or later. I used to have this problem regularly, when leaving the printer with the filament loaded whole night. Moving up 150mm helps, but I unload the filament now after printing. Before the next print I cut 30-40mm of the filament away, no more problems. Unused filament is stored in a closed box in a heated room.

Thansk for the replay/helps so far. I moved the extruder arm up 160mm friday, but this morning the filament had broken. Guess I’ll take it out at least on Friday. Now fiddeling on by figuring out how to best get my models to be standing still on the heatbed while printing.

Same thing. Did anybody tried filament guide? like this
