Any experience with K8400 and Simplify3D?

I’m considering buying Simplify3D for my K8400. Has anyone here tested it? Worth the rather hefty $150?

I’m also considering buying Simplify3D for my K8400.

There’s an ok review here: http://nicklievendag.com/simplify3d-vs-makerbot-desktop/

The review’s from July 2014

About the speed I sliced the Yoda bust with Cura on a not so up-to-date desktop and it took 21 sec. A bit slower but far from the 5 minutes of the Makerbot.
I don’t know now but a few month ago I’ve heard many people complaining about some bugs.

It’s a huge investment so it has to have serious improvements to be worth its money.

I’m also interested by a review if someone buys it.

I just bought it. Didn’t work out of the box as default settings for K8400 assumes a heated bed is present and thus won’t print because target temp is never reached. Duh. Well I fixed that and just got first print at “Medium” setting done. Looks very nice, the piece is the best I’ve got so far. Some tweaking will still be needed though. I’ll report back when I’ve used it a little more and, like… u know, read the manual.

Also bouht it couple weeks a go and yes you have to chance settings so that there are no heating bed,
But that’s easely done. Printed some objects and they where best prints so far. After some fast study
Of the software seems to be very poverfull especially with one nozzle prints. It is possible to give many
Differents settings for one print that change middle of print depending of what part of the object you are printing and that makes simply 3d really nice. With two nozzle haven’t been so lucky yet but propably im doing something wrong, need to experiment more. Its a good looking software with lota of options to use, also good user forums. Unfortunetaly it hase so bugs maybe and with maybe i meen that simplify 3d sends this and then some gcode commands what vertex does not understan and you have to reset vertex. Last words 150€ is a lot from a software that only prints but if you are willing to do some good prints and weird and fun prints with the programmable printing commands it’s a must have. Hope this helps to some direction.

Chris.

I agree with you Chris. Nice prints, powerful options but definitely some bugs. My printer needed a reboot after some tests I made. The settings for K8400 seems to be in beta, but I will stick to simplify3d from now and nag their support to fix the bugs.

I’m kind of curious why you want to pay so much for this software. What is it that Repetier Host plus Cura doesn’t do well, or does so badly it’s unacceptable?

€150 seems a huge amount to have to pay for for what looks like marginal extras - I can understand it if 3D printing was your business (like the guy who did the review above who has to repair models that get sent to him and do a lot of stuff with support), but for most users that’s a lot of money on features you’re not going to be using on every model you print, isn’t it? I mean it’s handy to have the extra options I guess, but €150?

That’s a lot of fancy filament!

I went for Simplify3D to have one an only one part to talk to for slicer settings and support, and to be able to expect/require more from a provider of commercial software. The free software is a bit of a jungle, especially for Mac users, and I wan’t to focus on 3D modelling and printing, not fiddling with the slicer which ideally should be a much more automated process than it is now.

I agree that it’s a bit expensive, and initial support for Vertex seems so-so but now I know for sure where to go with my issues and since I’ve paid I can expect better attention. I hope.

Well, there is always Warez for those who want’s everything for free

Hello,
i looked at simplfy3d.com. “149$” (German shops wants more 150 Euro) is really cool price. They will have no chance to get many customers. Or they can offer like OEM Software for 20-30 Euros.

What other changes to the 8400 profile in S3D are needed, apart from the heated bed?
The XYZ & flip axis settings look wrong compared to the Repetier-Host

just a comment:

There is no strong infill patern ( like honeycomb )
forum.simplify3d.com/viewtop … =23&t=1560

and developpers didn’t heard the users complains.

Ive been using simply3d for several months now (On a K8200) and to be honest i would not go back to the free ones.

Yes it has some bugs, only one ive found is the infil percentage can change when you change over from PLA to ABS printing.

The upside is that, so far ive not had a bad print since ive been using it, and i print something most days.

Also the quality of the final parts seems to be better

Also the slicing seems to use fewer moves than cura and repietier, especially on the extruder retract.

Hope this helps

Hi everyone,

i build my vertex about a 3 weeks ago and started using simplify3d 2 days after the first print.

i really like the faster slicing time and the more flexible Support Options.

At first i had to tweak some Settings here and there but now im quite confident if got a good Setup.

If you wanna try out my Settings here is my Process file http://uploaded.net/file/e9muk3xu wich you can Import into your simplify3d

the 0.2 layer size is for a Halo rifle im printing, for some parts i use 0.1, i also tested out 0.05 but still have some Problems with that layer height, especially with the first 3 layers when printing at 0.05 mm layer height.

Hello MavRaven.

I get a virus warning when I try to install that file…

Hmm thats strange, i can upload it to a different hoster but im printing at the moment so i need to wait about an hour until the print is finished an im able,to export the settings again

Im now printing with dual head and changed a bit of stuff here an there but it seems to be working great i vsn export you the dual head settings also if your interested.

I’d be happy to get a copy of your dual head settings

Hi i uploaded all my settings in a Winrar file http://ul.to/t91kwab9

I now use different processes if i want to print with 1 head or 2 heads and when printing multicolor parts.

The only thing that is not working perfectly is the distance between the two nozzles its stil not perfect but i havent gotten around to calibrating that.

additionaly i tuned my start and end scripts so that an anker is printed at the beginning to prime the nozzle and at the end the bed lowers by 100 and the printhead returns to home.

please let me know what you think of my settings.

i only print with pla which is quite obvios when you see my temperatures

edit: i have to say im still using simplify3d 2.2.2 because i had some errors with 2.2.3 and so i went back to the old version which now works like a charme

Hi did anyone try out my settings ? i would really like to know how your experience is with my settings ?
