The Preamp - K8084 - one channel faulty

Hi!
Greetings from Croatia and thanks for the great diy kits!

I have a problem, since I’m a noob, and a rusty one at that, maybe someone experienced could help me on this one.
It passed about a year since I’ve basically thrown the K8084 away due to a faulty one channel sound. I did get a new one but I’d like to make this one operable, too. It was my second kit I worked on, and is it somewhat geekish to say I enjoyed it? It threw a lot of bad energy of my mind and I was actually thinking I’m getting somewhere. My enthusiasm got to a place I was going to jump on to making Tube Amps and Preamps.

So, to the topic:
I don’t know how to test what’s really the problem, all I can say is that after I made the kit it was working as a charm. Got not only the volume boost but a quality one also.
Now being it all looking like a skeleton I asked a friend of mine if he could make a nice wooden case for it. I also added on the LED VU from Velleman, drew out a schematic for my friend to build the case, but afterwards he did it one of the channels, to say it bluntly GRAWLS and ROARS. I believe it’s the right one. Now, the VU meter is working as before, I’ve tried to re-solder everything back to place on the (first) K8084 - with a big BUT.

One of the channels is still not working, it’s producing a heavy amount of noise. I’ve tried switching the stereo input/outputs and it just travels as I switch - either the left stereo works the right equals noise and vice-versa. What could be the problem and how to test it? I assume some parts need changing, but which ones? And would you possibly know, if this kit is modable? Can something give it a cleaner boost, can it be upgraded?

Thanks to all in advance!

Most likely a mechanical problem or ground problem.
Difficult to solve without actually being able to examine your assembly.
I would start by removing enclosure, VU-meter etc… and test the bare kit.
Left and right channel are identical and since one channel is working correctly, you can compare voltages/levels.

What is there to test and how? Could you be so kind and show it on the K8084 shematic? I have a pretty decent multimeter, and know how to use it, but there are no ‘burn’ marks on the PCB itself, so I don’t know what to change or for that matter what to test and how – NOOB, remember?

There is nothing wrong with being a noob, but please understand that explaining how to troubleshoot audio circuits is not feasible within the scope of this forum.
Furthermore, a multimeter will not be a great help, a signal generator and scope are more suited.
We’d recommend to either have a friend look at your circuit, or to return it for inspection/repair.

The only friend I know that is good in this field and has the right tools will charge me for a mere inspection, not to mention another “friend” did something when making the case, so now it’s distorting the sound. Nobody had a similar problem? That’s why I joined this forum, to learn and possibly answer somebody they don’t have the right answer to.
Well, I think I’ll trash the thing. Thanks anyhoo…

Velleman means: just try your preamp without all the rest connected: so source - preamp - amp like it worked before. See if this works again. If not:

  • check the power supply with your multimeter
  • Change the two IC’s. They are TL072 (or 82) and cost not much.

If it works without all the rest: troubleshoot the rest
