PCGU1000 Analysis

Seems reasonable indeed, Cliff

Thank’s Vell255

I know this is an old thread, but I have a germane question for you guys: Have you tested this front-end on Windows 7 (32-bit)? I just installed the executable, which seems to install and start up fine, but I can’t seem to get it to “turn on”. The “power” indicator remains off and the entire control panel is unresponsive.

I tried XP-SP3 compatibility mode and that didn’t make a difference. The Compatibility Troubleshooter suggested XP-SP2 which also didn’t appear to resolve the issue.

Reverting to the standard front-end brings the device back to life.

I’d really like to get this working because I think it’s much more straightforward and easy to use than the standard controls. If you don’t have access to Windows 7, I’d be happy to experiment with settings.

Hello,

Unfortunately (for you, fortunately for me) I have no access to or experience with Vista or Windows 7, and it is not likely I ever will as my biggest client (the one that pays the bills, with over 17,000 users) will be moving from XP to a Linux based platform over the next couple years–as will I.

Like them, I am all done with Microsoft’s changing everything every 2 years just so they can maintain their cash flow. When you have 17,000 users the cost of upgrading the operating system, maybe the workstations, and retraining the users in a business environment–for no real benefit (Vista/W7 vs, XP) just cannot be justified, particularly in this fiscal climate. Gartner has put the cost at over $200 per workstation, with 17k users that’s over $3.4M–it’s not going to happen…

OK, down off the soapbox…

I believe that the Velleman staff had it running on Vista, perhaps they can help–however please understand that this is not a Velleman product, so they are not obligated to support it. It’s just something I knocked together.

It does use a number of API calls that may not be valid on Windows 7–IDK, I wish I had a better answer however I am winding down my Windows development and moving on…

Hahahah! Well, for me this is an avocation, so I have an unlimited budget of time to mess around. I’m an old-school EE who’s in the process of setting up a semi-capable home lab for whatever I feel like working on.

My vocation is somewhat dependent on keeping things running in large manufacturing companies (ERP stuff) who use you-name-it on their desktops. So one of the things I sort of have to do is develop a level of competence in you-name-it. In one respect, MSs cash flow strategies dovetail with mine, at the cost of having to be in a constant state of learning new things (“quirks” is probably more accurate).

IIRC, somewhere in this thread I read that you used Delphi for this. That I don’t have. If it were VB I’d take a shot at trying to get it working. Is the source code you made available a while ago still relevant?

It is VB, VB6…

I am an old school ME (MIT '71) that got involved in mini and micro computers in the mid 70s–except for a short drift in to fiscal management ('cause I was the “guy with the numbers”) I’ve been playing with them ever since.

The source that’s on my site is the same vintage as the installation package, however it’s not the latest. I’ll get that packaged up and post it tomorrow some time–PM me and I’ll let you know when.

Being semi-retired I built a man-cave in the back yard, here are some shots of same…

North end:

Drool. Your shop is better equipped than many real labs I’ve seen.

There doesn’t seem to be any way to send you a PM. Maybe that function isn’t enabled until an account has aged with good behavior for a while. Regardless, I’ll keep an eye on this space.

Being the time of year it is it may take me a bit to get the latest source and package together–but I will do it…
