I built this kit and the screen lights up but its blank. Ivbe tried many times even leaving it alone for 30 min or more but still only a blank screen.

Most likely an assembly problem. Check board for soldering errors. Pay special attention to the LCD lines. Make sure LCD and µcontroller get +5V. Check contrast setting. Make sure none of the buttons is shorted or remains pressed.
