hi, i have recently built the mini sound level kit and the leds seem to always go sequencialy to full scale whatever the volume. adjusting the sensitivity works but always to full scale the first led seems to come on them slowly fade out after the rest go out immediately. is there any way to test the circuit by removing the mic and using an adjustable resistor or millivolt supply to test the lighting sequence?
Did you use fresh batteries ?
Did you run the kit from a power supply instead of batteries ?
Make sure GND of microphone is soldered OK.
thanks for the reply, i used a brand new 2032 battery, joint on the mic looks ok, i am a gas engineer just starting with electronics , thats why i thought the kits would be the best place to start,
any idea why the first led takes a couple of minutes to fade out? 
Most likely an assembly problem.
If you can provide links to hi-res and sharp pictures of both component and soldering side, we can take a look at your circuit.

Soldering look rather poor.
Spotted some bad solderings that might result in open/intermittend circuit.
Check every solder joint and resolder if any doubt.

At least an estimation of an average battery life, with respect to an estimated consumption?
about 3.5 hours on a CR2032
