K8076 software on the CD missing?

Hi. 1) I have assembled K8076 but could not find the folder ‘K8076’ on the CD that manufacturer enclosed with the kit. The manufacturer’s instruction says - select this folder and run SETUP.EXE Where to find this software? looks as the manufacturer’s fault… Can I download this file from somewhere?
2) My notebook only has 15-pin port (HD15 ?) Can I build a connecting cable DB9 - HD15 using just 6 wires ? If yes, I would need the pin schematic. Or I need a computer with the RS232 ?

  1. There is a download on the Velleman site of PicProg. Don’t know if that’s the software you mean or need.
  2. Your 15 pin port is a VGA connection… Yes one can make an adapter of 15 p to 9 pins but it will never work. I can even make an adapter between a 16 A schuko power plug on one side and a Gardena waterhose connection. But when I put the 16 A plug in a 230 V outlet, there won’t be water coming out of the other side… SO as mentioned on the site of Velleman: this kit only works with a native COM (serial) port.

I found the download “PICprog 2009 Rev 3.0.0.5”. I guess it’s the same thing as the file in folder ‘K8076’ which should have come with the manufacturer’s CD with the kit.

  1. Analogy with waterhose sounds convincing, indeed :slight_smile: So, VGA port can only do with an external monitor… then no use of it for what I need… There is also an option to use the serial-usb converter (in Lithuania it costs 26 EUR), however, I read somewhere that it produces unpredictable results and thus better to avoid… Then the only way is to find a desktop with serial port. Interestingly… why it is absent in laptops?

Never trust an USB-serial converter for this.
Because RS232 ports are very slow, Intel gave them up already years ago. Most people don’t need them anymore according to Intel.
