K8050 15 Channel Infrared Receiver Kit on RF Remote

Hi All,

I am looking to purchase a IR receiver kit - Velleman K8050 15 Channel Infrared Receiver Kit.
I would like to get peoples professional advice on if the following will work with this device.

I am planning on using the module to allow me to create IR signals that can be learned that will control buttons on a RF remote directly. All in one single RF remote currently controls all of my light switch plates through my house.

Looking to hook these lights up to SQ blaster system and have full control of lighting system through iOS devices like iphone, ipad etc.

The only way to make the light switches compatible is to somehow create IR signals to control the lights. the following post is a basic outline of what some other people have done to RF remote controlled items to sync with IR remotes etc.

Do you think its possible to do something similar with the Velleman K8050 15 Channel Infrared Receiver Kit on the following RF remote that controls teh following type of switch plates:

If this is possible how many channels would I need?

The remote is setup so that you press a number room you would like to control (ROOM 1-4) and then press the number light that is programmed to it (LIGHT 1-9). numbers 7 & 9 are only available to control dimming switches. that means that you are only allowed to use 2 dimming switches per room on this remote. Each dimmer number (7 & 9) has a + & - button to control level of dimmer. I can setup house so that i have two RF remotes wired and programmed to these remotes allowing me a total of 8 rooms. i just need to know roughly how many channel IR receivers i will need for this? i know it will be dependent on how many lights and switches etc but if you can give me a rough indication on exactly what a single channel can support then i can calculate the amount.

Or do I just need amount of channels as per the amount of buttons I will be pressing on the RF remote to control the switches/lights? If I work out that I will be using buttons 1-9 and ROOM1-4 and SCENE 1-4 as well as the ALL ON/OFF button for each of the two remotes, then i could safely say that i would need maximum 54 channel IR receiver or 4 of the Velleman K8050 15 Channel Infrared Receiver Kits. Is this correct?

If we understand your application correctly, you will need one K8050 channel per button, however, please note that the K8050 has only 3 addresses, so 3x15= 45 channels is the maximum amount of channels that can be achieved.

Great, Thanks for your reply.

So your saying that you can program each KL8050 (x3) to run at different channels to allow a maximum of 3 x 15 = 45 channels working together. I should have no problems in cutting down teh amount of buttons that i need to use on the remote to 45.

Also would be great if you could let me know what remote i could use to learn the IR codes of K8050 or VM122 IR receiver to program and setup on the IR blaster system. Is it the 15 Channel VM121 remote. Will i only need one of these remotes to learn all 45 channel codes programmed to different addresses on 3 of the VM122 modules? Also just want to make sure that the VM122 is exactly the same module as the K8050 just in an assembled form. Thanks

VM122 is assembled version of K8050.
VM121 remote is suited to learn the codes to your universal remote.

Thanks for all of your assistance. One last question though.
Do i definately require the VM121 remote for my purposes if i am not going to use a remote to control the IR receiver. I am going to use an iOS device. just need to know if the VM121 remote is required at setup stages to send codes to the IR receiver channels so then i can learn those IR codes to use in my SQ blaster system.

Thanks

You need the Velleman remote to learn the codes to your universal remote or other device.
The device must be equipped with a learn mode to learn IR codes from a remote.
